Happening this Week

OLDTONE ROOTS MUSIC
September 7th-10th, Thursday-Sunday, times vary

This weekend-long celebration of musical and community tradition and harmony is not simply about the impressive 20+ bands performing bluegrass, classic country, hot swing, traditional mountain fiddling and more across the 3 stages. On the 150-acre Cool Whisper Farm in North Hillsdale families are invited for some “camping, pickin and singin” (full camping tickets available); to learn from hands-on instrument workshops and to let loose at the Cajun Contra Square & Swing Tent. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Columbia County without local farm-to-table food, and with band names like Roochie Toochie & Ragtime Shepherd Kings and Moonshine Holler, this event is guaranteed fun. The organizers of the event write, and I wholeheartedly agree, “Participation is Preservation.” Tickets $25-$125; Full Camping Passes $160

JAMES MONTGOMERY BAND
September 8th, Friday 7-9PM

Between recording with Kid Rock and sitting in with Gregg Allman, James Montgomery is a busy man. Thankfully, this Detroit-raised blues legend has found time to once again return to the Poli Club! Joined by special guest Marissa Licata—star powerhouse soloist with a Masters from New England Conservatory—who has also found a moment between her tours with Alicia Keys, Ben Harper, Gloria Estefan and others. Together these dynamic performers will demonstrate their vital presence in the Blues genre today, and help carry the musical tradition through the 21st century.

ART HEIST: FIVE POINTS GALLERY FUNDRAISER
September 9th, Saturday 7PM

The Five Points Gallery Promises an evening of delightful tomfoolery during which a great heist will occur to support the gallery’s exhibition and education programming. In this most clever event, guests will “case” the gallery 50 pieces of art on display that have been donated by professional artists during cocktail hour. Then the heist begins! In order from one’s level of ticket purchased, starting with the “Mastermind Thief” followed by the “Cat Burglar” (only 1 remaining of each!) and down to “Bandit” and “Robber” Thieves, each group will rush in and abscond with their favorite piece! Witnesses are of course necessary to any great heist, but will not participate in the steal. Everyone is encouraged to wear black as any stealth art robber would. Tickets $50-$1,000.
