EVOLUTION OF BEAUTY: BOOK TALK WITH RICHARD PRUM
January 18th, Thursday 7-8PM

In his eye-opening book The Evolution of Beauty, Yale University ornithologist and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Richard Prum maintains that Darwin’s sexual selection is not simply a reflection a result of the functional aspects of natural selection, but rather a co-evolution of arbitrary aesthetic characteristics of males and female attraction. From his 30 years of fieldwork, he has concluded it is the aesthetic preferences of women and consequent derision pleasure in this beauty that drives evolution of males in allspecies—and that of course includes humans. In this framework, human females have long been dictating the changes in male bodies, and even maleness itself, through evolutionary time. Think bower birds, peacocks, human men and more. Wine and cheese to follow and books will be available for purchase and signing. Don’t forget to register online or by calling as space is limited! Free.
