One Mercantile

Browsing through the shelves of the recently opened One Mercantile on Castle Street in Great Barrington, one can find a wide variety of gifts; sustainable bamboo toothbrushes, local black walnut cutting boards, hand-woven pillows, artisan beer soaps and glass straw sippers. The common denominator? The goods are sourced from small production and fair trade companies and frequently from local artists.

Berkshire locals Abby Webster and Andy Pruhenski had a clear mission in mind when opening their new shop. “We're trying to make a thoughtful, interesting store filled with small production goods” says Webster. “We support small productions but don't just narrow ourselves to Great Barrington or just within the USA. For example, there are some amazing things coming out of Canada.”

Popular gifts in the shop include conflict quilts from India and Falcon Enamelware because, as Webster puts it, “everyone loves vintage.” And take note parents; this store also has enviable gifts for children, like temporary tattoos and toy blocks.

As the holiday season approaches, it's never too soon to get the jump on shopping. Support local artists and small companies in the process.

Remember, friends don’t let friends live without BerkshireStyle’s favorite things.
