Classics with a Twist

Made of one of the rarest and most luxurious fibers, alpaca wool, Alicia Adams' clothing and accessories present a quiet sophistication. They seem almost reflective of the understated beauty of the Berkshires themselves.

“It’s the ultimate in stylish luxury,” said Adams. She describes the alpaca as softer than cashmere yet durable, stretch resistant, lightweight and very warm. It is also cultivated in keeping with sustainable agriculture. Adams believes part of the success of her business is due to her customers’ shared enthusiasm for alpaca.

Her approach to design also may explain why she has created such a loyal and far-reaching fan-base in the two years since her business launched. Elegant silhouettes, innovative use of texture and weave, and touches of whimsy are signature elements of Adams’ approach to design. “I design what I like myself. I am practical, but I love being fun. I get excited that our customers keep coming back.”

And come back her customers do. Their rapt enthusiasm has brought Alicia Adams Alpaca to boutiques nation-wide and across Europe, as well as to Barney’s and Bloomingdale’s. “I love her color palette and high level of quality. She’s a master at design,” said one devoted buyer.

While Adams also enjoys followers as far away as Japan, her designs are particularly well suited to life here in the Berkshires. “There’s a real sense of style here,” said Adams. “Weekends are full. People are chic, stylish, and well-put-together.”

Although Adams may sound like a long-time Berkshire resident, it was only as recently as the spring of 2006 that Adams and her husband bought their farm outside Millbrook and settled in with their first 15 Suri alpacas. And their farming business is every bit as successful as their textile business. Adams Suri Alpacas Inc, with its rare breed now numbering more than 200, boasts the largest Suri herd in the northeastern U.S.

Experimenting with the wool harvested from her own beloved family-farm alpacas was initially a hobby for Adams. But with her talent for design and her background in fashion marketing, word spread quickly about her products, and soon she and her husband had two businesses to run.

To share this success and live in this special part of the world has been beyond rewarding. Adams and her husband cherish this bucolic setting as ideal for raising their three children. “It’s amazing to be here. I love it here in the Berkshires.”
