Their Bark is Better with Every Bite

by Penny Michels

Named “The Ben and Jerry’s of Chocolate” by epicurious.com, Berkshire Bark has quickly become a favorite artisanal chocolate bar and a signature symbol of Berkshire specialty foods on the market today.

A second bite of Berkshire Bark is the only option for anyone lucky enough to taste these amazing chocolate bars made in Sheffield, Massachusetts, in the very heart of the Berkshire Mountains.

The company's tiny production room, which employs only three deliciously happy local residents, is located in the back of the Market Place Café in Sheffield. Chocolatier Kevin Schmidz is the wizard behind the incredibly delicious and zany creations mixed together to produce Berkshire Bark.

The bars are each handmade using 100% natural Belgian chocolate to bind together ingredients ranging from whole roasted nuts and fresh citrus zest to fiery tropical spices. Kevin uses no preservatives, no shortcuts and only honest, natural ingredients to mold each bar.

All packaging, which is as unpretentious yet beguiling as the product itself, is done on the Sheffield premises as well. The smells emanating from that kitchen on a production day will carry you to chocolate heaven.

One of our favorites reviews is from a Los Angeles resident, “The 'Jumpin’ Java' was probably the best coffee chocolate I’ve ever had. The best part is that you can taste all the different textures from toffee, cocoa nibs and coffee beans.”

The company's regional and national sales cover over one hundred fifty retail stores including Whole Foods Markets. Their online presence is extensive and includes, most notably, Amazon.com.
