The Farmer's Wife

In the mid-20th century, women, tasked with the never-ending process of converting fresh produce from local fields into a parade of family dinners, eagerly embraced the convenience of commercially prepared frozen dinners. TV dinners, then frozen entrees, became the rage among increasingly fragmented and busy families.

Families are busier and run in even more directions in the 2000s, but the prosaic pre-made dinner has moved far beyond its humble origins. The tristate region, with its sophisticated, upscale clientele, is served by a variety of “foodie” outlets that allow them to take home divine dinners to heat and serve.

Among these outlets is the Farmers Wife, with locations in Millbrook and Ancramdale. Once again, meals are crafted from produce sourced from farms just down the road and from purveyors across the Northeast.

In 2002, Dorcas Sommerhoff—the farmer’s wife—turned her decade-old, home-based business into a café and catering service. Now it is owned by her daughter, Emilie Sommerhoff, and her husband, Job Yacubian, an award-winning chef, whose two cafes invite locals and visitors alike to linger over breakfast or to refuel after a midday bike ride.

Prepared-foods take-outs can be ordered in advance or on the go.

The cafes always have customers' favorites on hand—among them egg-and-cheese sandwiches, sesame noodles and curried chicken—and seasonal "chalkboard" specials. Baked goods are prepared on site and include pies, brownies, nut squares, and decorated cookies; cakes can be custom ordered, too.

The cafes also sell local farm products as well as their own chicken potpies, quiches and soups.

The Farmers Wife will cater parties and events from intimate dinners to lavish weddings, providing everything from tent rentals and entertainment to exceptional food and service.
