Illustration at the Rockwell

by Penny Michels

When spring finally decides to come to the Berkshires, be sure to plan a trip to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. There you’ll find the world’s largest and most significant collection of works by Norman Rockwell as well as a beautifully designed campus that includes the artist’s original Stockbridge studio complete with easel, brushes, books and furnishings. The museum building was designed by architect Robert Stern, and reflects his classic style.www.nrm.org

The Rockwell Museum is unique and important in its dedication to expanding the appreciation of the art and business of Illustration. Since 1993 the Museum has exhibited the work of more than 500 illustrators. Take advantage of the four new installments of the 2013, “Distinguished Illustrator Series”. Features include drawings for covers of The New Yorker, picture book art, iconic advertising images and other works by some of America’s most exciting contemporary illustration artists.

If you go before May 5th you’ll discover an exhibit of the bewildering, complex and deliberative works of artist Istvan Banyai on display. The exhibit, appropriately named, “Istvan Banyai: Stranger in a Strange Land”, provides a comprehensive picture of the Hungarian-born artist whose illustrations reflect an unusual, playful and surprising view of the world.www.nrm.org

Perplexing, stubborn and charmingly conversational, Istvan Banyai works primarily from his studio in Lakeville, CT. His striking imagery and powerful drawings have appeared on the covers and pages of The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, The New York Times, GQ and Esquire and have been featured by Absolut Vodka, Nickelodeon, MTV Europe, Encyclopedia Britannica, Penguin Putnam/Viking among others.

Banyai has also published books filled with illustrations intended for scrutiny by readers of all ages. You can visit and join the artist for “Zoom! A Special Family Day” on Saturday, April 20, from 1PM-4PM. The event promises to be, “an exciting journey through the art of Istvan Banyai and his picture books."
