Cocktails & Cole Porter

It will be a “De-Lovely” evening October 24th when Sharon Playhouse presents Cocktails and Cole Porter from 5:30-7:30PM at the home of Marilyn Appel, 69 Mudge Pond Road, Sharon CT.

But when it comes to matter of attire, it will not be Anything Goes. In keeping with the times of the debonair, witty composer and socialite, supper club attire is required.

Award-winning actress Lee Harrington, who played Eliza Doolittle in last summer’s Playhouse production of My Fair Lady, will be among the performers for the benefit. She will be joined by Brandon Nase, the voice of Audrey II in the Playhouse production of Little Shop of Horrors.

“We’ve never really done a fall fundraiser before,” said Artistic Director John Simpkins. “Normally, you do a fundraiser when you are in trouble. We are not in trouble but we have an interesting duality - the artistic life of the Playhouse and the support and enthusiasm from our patrons are incredible, but like everyone we struggling with operational costs and our buildings are old. We need to make our patrons more comfortable.”

He said Harrington is a “terrific, terrific actress” who appeared in Into the Woods on Broadway. She knocked our socks off in her audition for My Fair Lady, he said. Nase, possesses “a legit musical theatre, high-bred voice,” he continued, “a voice to die for. He has so much Cole Porter in his repertoire that it was a natural choice.”

Simpkins said the Playhouse seems “to have hit a chord with people” in focusing on Porter. “As we evolve as a theater, we will always have a connection to the classics,” he said.

“Musical theatre is still trying to find itself in this century,” he added, “but boy they knew how to in the early part of the last century. Cole Porter wrote both music and lyrics, and because of that, his songs were better integrated in terms of what he was doing. I love his wit and humor.”

Tickets for the event are $125 per person. Call 860-364-SHOW x 100 to reserve tickets or mail checks to Sharon Playhouse, PO Box 1187, Sharon, CT 06069.
