Composer Krists Auznieks, Norfolk ‘18, will be performing two of his original compositions — a piano trio and piano quintet—alongside several prestigious colleagues. Gain an insiders perspective from the composer himself on both the compositional process and his musical inspirations. Questions and comments are encouraged in this fun and engaging event. Free.

ERA OF ELEGANCE: GILDED AGE ENTERTAINING
February 23rd, Saturday, 4 - 5PM

The Gilded Age—spanning from the 1860s through WWI—was a time of calling cards, horse drawn coaches, afternoon tea, cotillions, lawn parties and formal dinners. During this lively presentation by Francine Segan, food historian and James Beard-nominated author of six cookbooks, discover the 19th century meanings of giving a lady a tulip instead of a rose, the most popular toasts of the era and why the nutmeg grater was the must have accessory of the 1890s. Segan appears regularly on TV for the Food Network, PBS, Discovery and History Channels and has been quoted in The New York Times and Vogue. Free.

MID-WINTER FIRESIDE CONCERT: HADYN SEEK

Close Encounters With Music is presenting a master class in musical humor exploring Haydn through three of his string quartets including his “Joke” Quartet. The performance will highlight the unexpected, amusing elements that Haydn incorporated into his compositions, as enjoyable today as they were for Haydn’s audiences in the late 18th century. World class musicians will join cellist and Musical Director Yehuda Hanani leading this night of musical comedy with their expert playing and commentary. $38

CLIMATE CHANGE, BEER AND SOLAR ENERGY
February 27th, Wednesday, 6 - 7:30PM

Join Mass Audubon’s Berkshire Sanctuaries for a tour of the solar-powered Berkshire Brewery. Co-owner Andrew Mankin will lead the tour and talk about how climate change impacts beer production and how solar energy can be a great alternative energy source. The tour will be followed by a social gathering complete with complimentary appetizers. Free.
