CITIZEN COUNTESS: SOFIA PANINA
VIRTUAL
October 17th, Saturday, 4 - 5PM

Join Adele Lindenmeyr, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Villanova University, for a fascinating talk revealing the untold story of Countess Sofia Panina. Descended from the Russian aristocracy’s highest ranks and heiress to one of its great fortunes, Sofia fought for education reform and the lives of the working class. Early in 1917 she became the first woman in world history to occupy a ministerial position in government but, after the October Revolution. the liberal countess, ‘Citizen Panina,’ was forced to flee Russia and the Bolsheviks. Once counted among the best-known members of her generation, few works by Western historians have mentioned her name and her remarkable life has never been written until Lindenmeyr wrote this book on which the talk is based.
