BSO NOW: MUSIC IN CHANGING TIMES

The BSO has started a series of video performances, Music in Changing Times: American Promise, with new hour-long performances recorded at Symphony Hall plus behind-the-scenes storytelling with conductors, composers and musicians. In the performance released this week, Thomas Wilkins leading the BSO in Jesse Montgomery’s Starburst; William Grant Still’s Out of the Silence and Duke Ellington’s New World-A-Comin’ featuring piano soloist Aaron Diehl; Ellington’s Come Sunday with Charlotte Blake as narrator and the fourth movement from Still’s Symphony No. 4. The video will be available to view for 30 days.

THANKSGIVING ON THE FARM: SHAKING UP TRADITIONS

Spend a leisurely day at Shaker Village filled with a variety of fall-fun activities as well as Pop-Up Holiday Market. Enjoy everything from a walk on the Farm & Forest Trail to Shaker talks and blacksmithing demos to children’s activities like gathering the pumpkins to feed to the pigs. On Saturday there will be a foraging workshop where you’ll gather materials and then create a holiday swag under the guidance of head gardener Lauren Piotrowski. $20 Adults, $8 Youth, Free Children 12 & under. $30 Foraging Workshop

HOLIDAY MEMORIES BY TRUMAN CAPOTE

Inspired by Truman Capote’s autobiographical short story about his own experiences growing up in depression-era Alabama, Holiday Memories recounts a friendship between two wayward souls: a precocious young boy, Buddy, and his adult cousin, Sook. Among the pine trees, they bake fruitcakes and welcome the coming holiday season offering a reminder of the many different forms that family takes and of the importance of shared humanity. $50 Adults, $25 Children 16 & Under, 50% Discount for Front Line Workers.

SOLAR ECLIPSES: SOMETIME LOCAL, ALWAYS SPECTACULAR

As a veteran of 72 solar eclipses, astronomer, Jay Pasachoff, is uniquely positioned to share recent scientific work related to eclipses, the international coordination of eclipse observations and future expedition plans. Dr. Pasachoff will illuminate you on his travels to see recent solar eclipses, including the 2017 total eclipse in the US and his planned expeditions including a 2023 annual eclipse for which the coverage of the Sun’s diameter from Orange County will be 78%. He will also discuss the research on the link between solar eclipses and the Sun-Earth connections as well as our understanding of the light streams from coronas of trillions of stars during an eclipse. $10 OLLI Members, $15 General Public.

MOVING PICTURES: AN EVENING WITH A PIXAR ANIMATION ARTIST

Tim Evatt, veteran Pixar Animation artist, is offering a glimpse into his career in animation and how he draws inspiration from the golden age illustrators, including the Berkshire’s own Norman Rockwell. This event gives a compelling, behind-the-scenes look at how Pixar animated movies are made. Evatt served as a set and character artist for more recent Pixar releases including Toy Story 3, Coco and the upcoming 2020 release, Soul as well as the production designer for the 2020 Oscar-nominated animated short, Kitbull, a major Pixar production to be released in 2022.
