PORTRAITS OF INDIGENOUS AMERICA: CATLIN’S COLLECTION
February 20th, Saturday, 4 - 5PM
VIRTUAL
The American painter George Catlin left behind a remarkable record of the lives of American Indians in the 1830s—an enormous task he undertook for fear that the indigenous peoples, the great buffalo herds and a way of life would one day vanish. This presentation, led by Smithsonian Museum docent, Dr. Donna Fowler, will provide background information on Catlin and a broad overview of his work— setting it in historical context as well as closely examining his style, subject choices and artistic intentions. Free.
