EVENING IN THE TROPICS: NORFOLK LIBRARY GALA
August 24th, Friday, 6 - 8PM

The Norfolk Library’s annual gala offers “An Evening in the Tropics” complete with mojitos, champagne and delectable bites. The Silent Auction boasts prizes like a 14-person “Taste of New Orleans” Dinner centered around a fabulous classic gumbo and a “Moveable Feast” on Tobey Pond, where you and 10 of your friends will swim, canoe and kayak your way through the meal, stopping along the shore for beverages, food and a bit of history. The highlight of the live auction will certainly bring out your tropical side—a week in a villa in Corsica with glittering bays, glitzy coastal towns and fabulous beaches included. And of course, all proceeds go to supporting the incredible free events that the library hosts throughout the year. $35.

BERKSHIRE JAZZ SHOWCASE:
JAZZ. BLUES AND IMPROVISATIONAL MUSIC

August 25th, Saturday, 1 - 6PM

The first ever Berkshire Jazz Showcase is a day to celebrate the deep talent pool of musicians from right here in our backyard to perform out on the Pittsfield Common. Featuring standout bands The Lucky 5, Andy Kelly Gypsy Jazz. Gruppo Mondo, Janes Ennis and Friends and the Ben Kohn Trio—each group represents a different type of genre—vocal, instrumental, modern, traditional and folkloric. Set down your lawn chair and blanket to claim your spot, grab some food from one of the food stations, pick up a beverage from the beer and wine garden and voila—a perfect way to spend the last weekend in August. If weather doesn’t cooperate the event will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church. Free

PAINTING MUSIC: A MUSIC MOUNTAIN MUSIC & ART EXPERIENCE
August 25th, Saturday, 11:30AM - 3PM

Music Mountain invites children and adults of all ages to participate in this collaborative experience on the lawn. In a drawing and painting session, you’ll draw on the live music and capture the emotions, sensations and responses in art. Afterwards, the Cassatt String Quartet will be performing world premieres inspired by visual art. Artist Vincent Inconiglios will also be “painting live music” during the performance, so you can watch the artist watch the music and watch him paint the music on paper.

AMBITION AND MANHOOD IN AMERICA:
GREGORY PARDLOW TALKS MEMOIR

August 30th, Thursday, 7PM

Air Traffic: Ambition and Manhood in America, from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gregory Pardlo, chronicles the author’s growing up in a family torn asunder when his father lost his job as an air traffic controller during the infamous 1981 air traffic controllers’ strike that redefined labor relations in America. Pardlo will be on campus at Simon’s Rock to read from and discuss his new memoir Air Traffic that was the required reading for all incoming students this year. Pardlo, who received the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for his volume Digest, has written a memoir that masterfully looks at personal and family relations with a historicized critique on blackness and masculinity. Free.

TIME TRAVELERS: A CARRIAGE RIDE THROUGH HISTORY
September 9th, Sunday, 10AM - 1PM

As the names suggests, hop in to history with a ride through town in a horse-drawn wagon. Learn about the founding of Stockbridge and the native Munsee tribe? Explore Naumkeag, the Mission House and other spots in Stockbridge to experience and learn about the town before it was the town you know today. The rides depart at 10AM, 11AM and 12 noon and is a fan favorite so make sure to register in advance! $3 - $15.
