Movie Marathon

In the run-up to the announcement of Oscar nominations we are in the midst of the richest time of the year for movie viewing. Theaters are screening the likely nominees, spreading a smorgasbord of films before our eyes.

During this season, Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center will celebrate six films that have gained critical acclaim in the past. On January 9th at 7PM, it will screen Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (2008, rated R), winner of eight Academy Awards, including best picture and best director. The film tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life.

Purple Rain, Prince’s s1984 semi-autobiographical film, will screen Thursday, January 30th at 7PM. The movie won Academy Awards for best original musical and best original song score. Its soundtrack hits include “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Purple Rain,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and more.

Who can forget Harold Ramis’ Groundhog Day (1993, rated PG). The classic story about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life, which starred Bill Murray at his wisecracking best, will be screened Sunday, February 2nd, also at 7PM.

Valentine’s Day will be marked by the presentation of Moonstruck (1987, rated PG) on that most romantic of days, again at 7PM. The film earned three Academy Awards, including best actress for Cher and best supporting actress for Olympia Dukakis.

Finally, on Thursday, February 20th at 4PM, the Mahaiwe presents The Great Muppet Caper (1981, rated G) following the Muppets’ travel to London to stop a jewel heist. Jim Henson made his feature film directorial debut with this mystery musical comedy.

Tickets for all films are $8 for adults and $5 for children. Popcorn, candy and beverages are for sale at the lobby concessions stand.

In addition, the Mahaiwe will present a special ski season screening of Warren Miller’s Timeless (2019) on Saturday, February 15th at 7:30PM. Tickets are $15, with $10 tickets available to Mahaiwe members and Ski Butternut and Catamount season pass holders.
