Sweet Spring

Great Mountain Forest invites area residents to experience the magic of maple sugaring Saturday, March 15, from 10AM to 2PM. The sap house is located at 201 Windrow Road in Norfolk.

From sap collection to boiling, visitors will learn about the whole process.

In addition, participants can meet expert foresters and educators who will describe the science behind syrup production.

The best part? Sampling warm, delectable syrup made right on the spot.

GMF has a 78-year-old sap house diary, a one-of-a-kind log that records data on sap output, sugar content, syrup yields, weather patterns, migratory bird arrivals and tree budding cycles. This treasure trove of information inspires research on climate change and forest health.

The sugarhouse also welcomes school groups and visitors on weekdays, depending on sap availability. Call ahead at 860-542-5422 to confirm that the sap house is in operation that day.

Great Mountain Forest (GMF) is a leader in forest stewardship, demonstrating how sustainable management can protect biodiversity and support ecosystems. GMF is a nonprofit whose holdings encompass 6,200 acres of contiguous forestland in Norfolk, Canaan, and Falls Village.
