Teas for the Season

by Alexis Savage

Tea has been one of the world’s most popular beverages for thousands of years. More recently there has been resurgence in popularity of tea drinking in the United States. The Berkshire’s region is privileged to be home to one of the premier tea companies in the world, Harney & Sons Fine Teas.

Fall is the perfect time to relax and enjoy a cup of tea, especially one with flavors and notes perfectly suited for the weather. Harney & Sons has many teas and tisanes, more commonly referred to as “herbal teas,” that compliment the crisp autumn environment. With the help of the fantastic employees at the Tasting Bar, Berkshire Style has chosen some options to keep you warm this fall.

For drinkers who are looking for fun, fall, flavors look no further than Pumpkin Spice. This caffeine-free option has a rooibos base, making a perfect choice for any time, day or night. For those unfamiliar with rooibos, it is an African red-bush. Its earthy tones are a beautiful compliment to the pumpkin flavor and fall spices.

Pumpkin does not appeal to your palate? Cranberry Autumn is another fall favorite. Cranberry and orange flavors are combined with smooth Chinese black tea. The careful balance of fruit flavor and black tea allows both aspects to shine. This tea contains caffeine; so pair it with your morning oatmeal or drink alone as an after-lunch pick up. For adventurous chefs and home cooks, this is a perfect tea to integrate into your harvest recipes, such as glazes, dressings and even deserts.

Autumn tea is certainly not limited to flavored teas. There are plenty of options for those who enjoy pure tea. Due to its malty flavors and propensity for briskness, Assam varieties are a great compliment to cooler weather. The heartiness of the tea can easily accommodate lemon and honey will highlight the existing notes, perfect for a pesky cold.

Nahorhabi Full Leaf is a great option for those seeking the warm flavor without an overpowering briskness. However if briskness is what you’re looking for, CTC Assam is as bold as it gets. If you enjoy milk with your tea, CTC is a good choice. If green tea is more your style, try Genmaicha. The toasted rice adds warmth as well as a lovely flavor the vegetative tones of the green tea. Green tea has fantastic health benefits as an added bonus; your immune system will thank you.
