The Town of Salisbury

by Penny Michels

Since 1925 the residents of Salisbury, CT, have been embracing winter in the Berkshires by hosting the annual Alpine Ski Jumping Winter Carnival and Jumpfest Weekend. The Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA) manages the details of this much anticipated and extremely popular tradition that features some of the best downhill skiers and junior jumpers from around the country.

Where but in Salisbury can you find a professional grade, beautifully constructed ski jump just steps from the village center? For two weekends this year, Satre Hill, named for a Norwegian immigrant who skied off the edge of a barn roof to demonstrate his love of the sport, will become the heart and soul of this very active Berkshire community. All are advised to “dress warmly and bring a cowbell to cheer.” Visit <a href="http://www.jumpfest.org"target="_new">www.jumpfest.org for a complete listing and schedule of the festivities.

Tucked neatly into the Northwest Hills of Connecticut, Salisbury and its villages of Lakeville, Taconic, Lime Rock and Amesville are convenient to the Appalachian Trail, mountains for hiking and skiing, lakes for fishing and canoeing and numerous art and music venues. It boasts a number of diverse and wonderful shops, a bistro, two bakeries and a delightful tearoom, Chaiwalla. To learn more about the goings on in town, take a look at the jam-packed monthly news and events publication called the Salisbury Sampler. <a href="http://salisburyct.us/livinginsalisbury/sampler"target="_new">livinginsalisbury/sampler

Salisbury’s Alpine Ski Jumping Winter Carnival runs from January 25 – 27, 2013. Enjoy live Curling demonstrations by members of the Norfolk Curling Club and the hilarious human dogsled race after the afternoon jumps. For visual drama it is hard to beat Alpine Jumping under the lights.

The Jumpfest and Eastern U.S. Ski Jumping Championships begin February 8 and go through February 10. Competitors are expected from both Switzerland and Norway this year. Jumpfest events include a Chili Cook-off hosted by local restaurants, and a highly imaginative Ice Carving competition. The perennially popular Snow Ball will fill the wonderful new space at the Lakeville Hose Company with music and dance.

In the upcoming weeks Berkshirestyle.com will focus on just what makes our towns unique. As new links come to life, new events unfold and neighbors are to be celebrated, we will continue to give you the information you need to live well and with style anywhere in the Berkshires.
