Back Porch Music
The banjo is inextricably associated with Bluegrass music but its origins trace far back to enslaved African Americans who first knew the instruments in their homeland.
Jake Blount, an award-winning banjoist, fiddler and singer who specializes in the music of Black communities in the southeastern United States, is slated to bring the art form to Hancock Shaker Village on Friday, September 2nd, when he performs as part of Back Porch Music.
Blount is a scholar of Black American music, speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and explains the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the categories of roots music and Americana.
For Back Porch Concerts, the performer sits on the back porch while listeners sit on the lawn on blankets or lawn chairs. If rain is forecast, the concert will move indoors.
Doors open at 6:30 PM. Tickets ($25/day of; $20/advance; 12 and younger admitted free) are non-refundable. There will be a cash bar.
