The Big Chill
Winter today bears little resemblance to the winters of 100 years ago. Warm homes, cozy cars, insulated clothing—it all measures up to an experience far-removed from the struggles experienced in the past. But that doesn’t mean that our forebears did not have fun during the long winter months.
February 16th the Hancock Shaker Village will let 21st-century denizens experience the outdoor activities that added zest to winter frolics of the past, including horse-drawn wagon rides, snowman making (weather permitting), visiting the animals in the Round Stone Barn, tree tapping, snowshoeing (bring your own snowshoes), blacksmithing and baking demos—as well as a chance to warm up by a roaring fire or indoors with live music, board games and more.
The day starts with demonstrations of ice harvesting and a history talk with Dennis Picard from 11:30AM to 2:30PM. It continues with tree tapping from noon to 2PM; music by the Eagles Brass Band at noon; a cider talk and tasting, 1-3:30PM; Shakers lives talk, 1:30 and 3PM; and music by Wild Bill & The Flying Sparks at 4PM.
A variety of food and drinks will be available for purchase at Seeds Market Cafe and the Shaker Mercantile gift store will be open.
All activities are included in admission: adults $20, youth (ages 13-17) $8, and kids 12 and under free. Hancock Shaker Village, 1843 West Housatonic Street, Pittsfield MA.
