Champagne Cocktail

by JANE WORTHINGTON-ROTH

Spring is in the air and that means the lovely wedding season is upon us. Many modern couples have shied away from traditional ceremonies and expensive receptions in exchange for intimate nuptials in a personal, quiet setting. In keeping with a personalized approach to their special day, some choose to serve signature cocktails. Although champagne is classic for toasting newlyweds, why not make it even more special with a champagne cocktail that is both classic and has a modern touch?

The well-known Mimosas and Bellinis are delicious champagne cocktails with the fruity overtones of orange or peach but I like to make a more sophisticated blend of champagne with Grand Marnier, a classic French liquor blend made with cognac and bitter orange. Grand Marnier has also created two Signature blends: Grand Marnier Raspberry Peach, and Grand Marnier Natural Cherry which are especially delicious and festive for either a wedding celebration or bridal shower.

CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL

Sugar cubes
Angostura bitters
Grand Marnier
Champagne or Prosecco
Fresh fruit or edible flowers as a garnish

Briefly soak a sugar cube in Angostura Bitters and place it into a champagne flute. Add 1 ounce of Grand Marnier, then top with champagne.

To dress up the cocktail a bit, place a raspberry in the glass to dance among the bubbles or secure a slice of fresh peach on the rim. For an exotic touch top the cocktail with an edible orchid, available near the fresh herbs in many local produce departments.
