PS21’s Double-Bill Party

PS21, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the performing arts, will hold its 2024 season Launch Party Friday, May 17th, at the PS21 Pavilion Theatre, 2980 Route 66.

There will be a members-only dinner party at 6PM, followed by “Beyond Ballet, Beyond Hip-Hop,” a double-bill performance of The Dying Swan and Its Cause of Death and Encounter, two genre-defying works that illustrate the groundbreaking direction of Japan’s current dance scene.

The Dying Swan and Its Cause of Death will be performed by celebrated Japanese ballerina Hana Sakai who will dance the Fokine classic, then plunge into visionary playwright/director Toshiki Okada’s unraveling of the motif, plodding, wobbling and musing aloud about why she, the swan, has to die.

Udai Shika will accompany with Saint-Saëns’ Le Cygne for solo cello in this comic mashup from chelfitsch.net.

It is followed by Moto Takahashi’s all-woman dance group, MWMW, performing Encounter, challenging gender norms with stunning hip-hop techniques and ensemble movements.

General admission tickets for the performance are $35.

PS21 is committed to presenting innovative performances by leading and emerging artists in its state-of-the-art black-box and open-air pavilion theaters. It fosters creativity through residencies and collaborations between performers working across disciplines and genres and offers the community free and low-cost workshop performances and programming.
