GB Public Theater

The Great Barrington Public Theater is primed for its sixth season with a gala and three theatrical works that shine a light on Berkshire County playwrights, performers and theater artists.

The gala is slated for Saturday, June 14th at 6:30PM at Saint James Place, 352 Main Street in Great Barrington. Supporters of the public theater are invited to roam from room to room which offers a handpicked selection of local fare.

Promoters tout it as “an evening designed to delight all the senses while supporting a cause that brings the arts to life.”

Tickets at $150 can be purchased here. Those who would like to purchase a sponsorship level, should reach out to serena@greatbarringtonpublictheater.org.

The first show of the season will be How to NOT Save the World with Mr. Bezos, opening Thursday, June 5th, and continuing through June 22. The June 7th and June 22nd matinees will be followed by ChatGBPT, a talk-back with the cast and crew.

Written by Maggie Kearnan and directed by Clay Hopper, it tells of a time it is illegal to be a billionaire. Jeff Bezos has agreed to give an interview in exchange for information about the federal case against him. But there’s something off about journalist Cherry Beaumont and the onstage Fact Checker has a few important clarifications to make. The fall of capitalism is about to get very messy.

Next up is Madame Mozart and Lacrimosa by Anne Undeland, directed by Judy Braha, and running from July 10th-27th at the McConnell Theater. Constanze Mozart, wife of the great composer, struggles mightily to feed her children, to survive her own shattering grief and to secure her husband’s musical legacy by completing his unfinished masterwork, the Requiem in D Minor, following his untimely death.

Finally, comes The Best Medicine, August 1st-17th, also at the McConnell. Written by Robin Gerber and directed by Matthew Penn, it tells the tale of Rachel, a free spirit in a long-term marriage. That ‘in sickness and in health’ vow is a distant memory but when her husband gets a progressive, incurable disease she’s thrust into the job she’s least suited for: self-sacrificing caregiver.

Great Barrington Public Theater was established in 2019 to create opportunities for theater artists and theater lovers in the Berkshires. It spotlights the many playwrights, actors, directors, designers and technicians in area towns, presenting new plays throughout the summer in the 300-seat McConnell Theater, the intimate Liebowitz Black Box, in the state-of-the-art Daniel Arts Center, on the campus of Bard College at Simon’s Rock and throughout the year at Saint James Place located in Great Barrington MA.
