JANE MONHEIT: CELEBRATE ELLA

Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz vocalist Jane Monheit is taking the stage at Norfolk Infinity Hall and is sure to put on a soulful show. Blessed with “a voice of phenomenal beauty,” according to The New York Times, Monheit can “rock a room with her transcendent voice and effervescent personality, not to mention her engaging smile” (The Wall Street Journal). Establishing herself as one of today’s best and most important vocalist-musicians, this new album is a tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald, whose beloved songbook albums had “biblical” importance to a young Monheit.

WAHCONAH FALLS: A HIKE WITH HISTORY
September 8th, Sunday, 1 - 3PM

Learn about the fascinating natural and cultural history of Wahconah Falls in this round trip, 1.5-mile hike led by naturalist and Tamarack Hollow Director, Aimee Gelinas. Weave through the hemlock groves and glacial erratics along the cascading brook and falls while learning about tree and plant identification. Visit the remnants of the Booth Talc Mill that once utilized the brook for power and learn about its cultural and economic significance to the area. Registration required. ZERO WASTE WORKSHOP: DIY MACRAME VEGGIE BAGS
September 10th, Tuesday 5 - 6PM

Mary Stucklen from the Berkshire Zero-Waste initiative will be leading this first of a series of workshops on reducing waste in the home. This first workshop will inform you about the hazards of plastics and teach you how to make an excellent alternative to carrying groceries—a DIY macrame veggie bag. So bring the whole family, along with your own pre-loved T-shirt to personalize your newest grocery helper. Free.

POETRY READING: UZODINMA IWEALA

The Fall 2019 Poetry and Fiction series at Simon’s Rock opens with internally-renowned, writer, filmmaker and medical doctor—Uzodinma Iweala. His first book, Beasts of No Nation, received high accoloades and was made into an award-winning film starring Idris Elba. His follow up novel was also well-received earning him Library Journal Best Book of 2018. Iweala also serves as the CEO of the Africa Center in New York City. Free.
