GARDENS OF SHEFFIELD: WEEKEND CELEBRATION
IN PERSON & VIRTUAL
July 23rd - 25th, Friday - Sunday
Sheffield Historical Society is celebrating the many gardens of Sheffield with a gala party on Friday, a gardening lecture on Saturday and a tour of five Sheffield gardens on Sunday. At the gala you’ll enjoy hors d’ouevres, wine, cocktails, a silent auction and live music by Mary Ann Palermo & First Take Band. The Saturday talk from Ron Kujawski is free and will address “Extending the Growing Season.” On Sunday, participants can visit each garden at their own pace between 10AM and 4PM with tour booklets available. Talk: Free. Tour & Gala Tickets: $100 for 1, $150 for 2.

PICNIC PARTY IN THE PARK: HATS OFF TO YOU

Bring your own Fabulous Fantasy Picnic blanket, basket and elegant dinner to celebrate your creative flair and support. Art Omi! Composer Phil Kline will be presenting the world premiere of his time-based installation, last words before disappearing from the face of the earth, which he wrote in 2001 and has not publicly performed until now. There is a Creative Hat Contest with the winners being featured on Art Omi’s Instagram with over 30k followers. Let art go to your head by creating a one-of-a-kind hat for the event to be judged in one of several categories: “Inspired by Nature,” “Inspired by Architecture,” “Inspired by Film or Literature,” “Inspired by Music,” “Inspired by Art Omi” and “Crowd Favorite.” Prepared picnics for 2 are available for purchase for $50. $100.

THE DOCTORS BLACKWELL: FIRST FEMALE DOCTORS

Elizabeth Blackwell believed from an early age that she was was destined for a mission beyond the scope of “ordinary” womanhood and, though the world at first recoiled at the notion of a woman studying medicine, her intelligence and intensity ultimately won her the acceptance of the male medical establishment and in 1849 she become the first woman in America to receive an M.D. Less well known is that she was soon joined in her iconic achievement by her younger sister, Emily, who was actually the more brilliant physician. Exploring the sisters’ allies, enemies and enduring partnership, author Janice P. Nimura presents a story of trial and triumph as together the Blackwells founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Woman and Children and changed the landscape of American medicine forever. $30.

THE MURDER OF KING TUTANKHAMEN: TUESDAY TEA TALKS
VIRTUAL & IN PERSON

Know in the rarefied world of Egyptology as Mr. Mummy, Bob Brier returns to the mansion with a visual presentation titled “The Murder of King Tutankhamen.” Three thousand years ago, 19 year-old pharaoh King Tutankhamen died under mysterious circumstances. A small tomb was hastily readied, his body mummified, fabulous jewelry and furniture was gathered, and the tomb was sealed. Brier will describe the fabulous discovery of the tomb in 1922 by Howard Carter and, using an examination of the king’s skull, a letter from his widowed queen and a royal ring, Brier will unravel the mysteries of Tutankhamen’s death and will present his theory that the young pharaoh was murdered. $20.

PLEIN AIR WATERCOLOR: PAINTING IN THE GARDEN
IN PERSON
Now through August 18th, Wednesdays, 10AM - 1PM
Explore the garden through the pleasure of watercolor painting with artist Ann Kremers. The class will work outdoors translating the vistas and details of the Berkshire Botanical Gardens into paintings. The session will begin with discussion of student work, demonstration and a helpful assignment. Ann offers encouragement and suggestions throughout the painting session to help each person find the way to express the garden. The class is open to beginners as well as experienced painters. $20 - 25.
