LAUREN BRINKERS POP-UP SALE: ONE OF A KIND SHOES

Enjoy this opportunity to meet and shop at this Pop-Up Shop from shoemaker and accessories designer Lauren Brinkers at Standard Space Gallery. Lauren is a shoemaker and artist living and working in Cornwall CT who learned first-hand on the job with factory workers in Hackney, bespoke shoemakers on Saville Road and continued her training with cobblers and fellow shoemakers in New York City. Each of her shoes is hand-painted, handmade and one-of-a-kind. They’re made with buttery soft vegetable-tanned leather, selected and sourced by the artist herself, pained with eco-friendly dyes in limited edition mixed palettes.

INTERNATIONAL PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL

The 12th Annual International Playwrights Festival returns to Warner Theatre to recognize the work of emerging and established playwrights and to build a link between the playwrights, the theatre community and their audiences. The festival is a two-night celebration of new works by playwrights from across the country and around the globe. Of the 150 plays that were accepted for consideration, 10 winners have been selected and will be performed. $17.

The forests of New England are more than just a habitat for wildlife, leaf peepers and dedicated hikers—they hold an abundance of foraging sustenance if you know how to look. On this walk you’ll learn about the utility of species found in our corner of Southern New England including what, and just as importantly, what not to eat! Free.

What would you do to go home again? Lisa Peterson’s stage adaptation of The Odyssey performed by members of The Acting Company brings new life to this ancient epic. Four young women trapped in the limbo of a refugee camp retell Odysseus’ adventures as they struggle with their own search for a home. Based on the revelatory new translation by Emily Wilson, its bold theatricality brings new humor and grace to a story we all think we know. $25 - $60.

PIANO VIRTUOSO: ROBERT BLOCKER IN RECITAL

Enjoy a special October performance on the grounds of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival featuring Robert Blocker—the former Dean of the Yale School of Music. An internationally acclaimed concert pianist, described by The New York Times as performing with a “virtuoso bent and considerable musical sensitivity,” Blocker captivated the Norfolk audience this past August with a performance of Gerald Finzi’s Eclogue. For this special recital, Blocker will present a program featuring Schubert’s Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Beethoven’s Bagatelles, Opus 119, Ginastera’s Sonata No. 1 and a selection of Scarlatti sonatas.
