INSIDE THE PERETZ SALON: ENGINE OF MODERN YIDDISH CULTURE
VIRTUAL
February 8th, Thursday, 7PM
How did a small apartment in turn-of-the-century Warsaw—the home of writer Y.L. Peretz—come to be the most formative space in modern Yiddish cultural history? That question was the starting point for The Yiddish Books Center’s recreation of the Peretz salon—one of the most popular displays in the Center’s new core exhibition, Yiddish: A Global Culture. In this virtual talk, chief curator and writer David Mazower explores the unique alchemy that occurred in this domestic space and discusses the challenge of reconstructing it. What was it about Peretz’s personality, ideas and influence that drew hundreds of young women and men to him at the start of their careers, and how did they go on to transform modern Jewish culture? Free.
