FULL MOON HIKE: A HARVEST/HUNTER’S SUPERMOON
IN PERSON

Enjoy this evening under the October Hunter’s moon—also known as the Harvest moon—at the beautiful Macricostas Preserve Lookout. This week’s full Hunter’s moon is also a Supermoon and will be the brightest of 2024. This is the perfect opportunity to connect with nature, meet new friends and enjoy a peaceful hike under the glow of the moon. This hike is for both fast and leisurely-paced hikers who can hike 3 miles with some steep inclines. Items to consider: appropriate footwear, insect repellant, headlamp/flashlight, water and snacks (or a full charcuterie spread to enjoy while watching the moonrise!)

FILM COLUMBIA 2024: FROM CHATHAM TO CANNES

For over two decades this nationally recognized film event, FilmColumbia, has been screening the very best upcoming American and international films. If a film screens here, there’s more than a good chance that it will go on to be nominated for one of the industry’s top prizes—think Cannes, Sundance, and Toronto Film Festivals. FilmColumbia’s 2024 lineup includes Blitz — Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen’s recreation of London in 1940-1941— which stars Saorise Ronan and Harris Dickinson. Another standout film is A Real Pain written, directed and produced by Jesse Eisenberg and featuring Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg—which follows mismatched cousins on a tour of Poland in honor of their grandmother. NATURE’S ENGINEERS: A BEAVER ECOLOGY WALK

Join Cary Institute Wildlife Biologist Mike Fargione for an interpretive hike exploring the ecology and management of one of nature’s ecosystem engineers, the American beaver. Using examples found on Cary’s 2,000-acre property, you will interpret how beavers have shaped past and current landscapes, explore the rich biodiversity of beaver ponds and learn about conflicts that arise when beavers reestablish themselves in areas occupied by people. Berkshire Botanical Garden is hosting a trio of cooking and craft spirit workshops highlighting fall produce and flavors. The Salt & Seasoning event will teach about the history of salt, peppercorns and herbal seasoning to make salty infusions and cook with all the flavors. The Fall Harvest Farm to Table Cooking class will be led by Miriam Rubin who will help you celebrate the late-harvest vegetables like sweet potatoes winter squash and Brussels sprouts by making a hearty soup. Also roasted squash a pear dessert and hot spiced cider. Join mixologist Billy Jack Paul—co-owner of Mooncloud in Great Barrington—for the Botanically Infused Craft Cocktail class where he will guide you through creating seasonal and classic craft cocktails. CLAY WAY: STUDIO TOUR

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to tour the great clay studios in Western Connecticut and beyond. Go behind the scenes to see how these artisan works are created and ask the artists about their creative process. There are 9 different studios to visit featuring the works of over 25 artists. From Alison Palmer’s animal-inspired, primitive-style works to Stephanie Haines’ functional ceramics with vibrant floral illustrations, there is something to match everyone’s tastes. Free.
