WIT Literary Festival is a celebration of writers, their work and the vital role they play in society. This year’s theme, The Power of Words: Authors & Activism, welcomes audiences to explore these abiding questions with a distinguished group of speakers renowned for their artistic virtuosity, intellectual passion, moral seriousness, restless faith and civic engagement. Speakers this year include Governor Deval Patrick, CIA operative turned author James Lawler and Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde. Prices vary.

COLD CANNING: THE EASY WAY TO PRESERVE THE SEASONS

Just in time for the colder months, the Gunn Memorial Library and the Hickory Stick Bookshop are partnering to host authors Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough for a talk on their latest book, Cold Canning: The Easy Way to Preserve the Seasons Without Hot Water Processing. PILOBOLUS DAY: MOVEMENT ABOUNDS

Join Pilobolus for their annual community celebration in their hometown of Washington, CT! An all-age event to revel in the joy of dance, movement, creativity and collaboration. Workshops are designed for people across their lifespan from the Alphabet Workshop designed to helps kids explore the magic of letters using motion to Connecting with Balance—Pilobolus' unique approach to help older adults move better. Also included lawn games, sweet treats and a Pilobolus Performance of Flight School. $15 Adults, free for kids under 18.

FALL GARDEN LESSONS: BULBS 101
September 28th, Sunday, 1PM - 2PM
Get to know spring-flowering and holiday bulbs for planting outdoors or forcing indoors with the staff at Ward’s Nursery. Their experts will discuss the basic overview of bulb types including unusual choices and their planting. The discussion will continue with strategies for creating potted indoor displays of forced bulbs to enjoy in January or February while winter winds blow. Free.

SEWING BASICS: GET TO KNOW YOUR SEWING MACHINE
Sunday, September 28, 1PM – 3PM
Come to this Sewing Basics workshop to find out what all those knobs and dials on your sewing machine are for and to explore different types of thread, needles and fabric. Use your now knowledge to make a little bag to take home! Students are asked to bring their own sewing machine. Three loaner machines are also available. Sewing tools and notions are in the shop. $75.
