SILKROAD ENSEMBLE: AMERICAN RAILROAD

Grammy Award-winning musical ensemble, Silkroad is a collective of artists representing dozens of nationalities, traditions and ideas who use music and art to demonstrate how great beauty can emerge from great difference. Experience this reimagining of Silkroad’s acclaimed American Railroad program—now with an intimate ensemble of eight world-class musicians led by the internationally acclaimed pipa master, Wu Man. This program presents a sonic tapestry of the past, evoking the powerful and often-overlooked contributions of Indigenous and African Americans, Chinese, Irish, Japanese and other immigrant communities who laid the tracks that transformed a nation. There will be a pre-show talk on the experiences of African American railroad workers with public historian Dr. Camesha Scruggs. $45 - $95.

WUNDERKINDER: PRODIGIOUS FRIENDSHIPS

In this special BIFF screening, Wunderkinder tells a tale of three exceptionally musically talented children who develop a deep and genuine friendship extending beyond their different religions and nationalities. Their world is one of curiosity, joy and talent but when the Nazis invade the Soviet Union, they and their families face mortal peril. Their world is turned upside down and they are suddenly no longer allowed to be friends. The film is in German with English subtitles. A Q&A with local screenwriter Stephen Glantz will follow the screening. $15.
