Hathaway Young

Millerton is an old agricultural town that fell into decline as New England’s dairy industry collapsed. But the town has reinvented itself in the past three decades, becoming a destination for day trippers looking for trendy shops, a vintage movie theater that, like the town itself, has packaged 21st century amenities behind an early-20th century façade, and gourmet foods.

Foodies find much to attract them in places such as 52 Main, Harney’s Tea Shop, Manna Dew,—which started as gourmet vegetarian and metamorphosed into a wine bar and eclectic restaurant—Irving Farm Coffee and a farmers market that features produce from local farms and vineyards. Even the Moviehouse has its own café/gallery, dubbed one of the “best hipster hangouts” by Hudson Valley Magazine.

Indeed, Millerton does quaint beautifully. But the newest addition to this clutch of culinary destinations sparkles with modernity. Hathaway Young, a gourmet café with an outdoor terrace and specialty food shop, is located just off Main Street at 56 South Center St. Accoutered in sleek stainless steel and glass the shop offers an array of gourmet foods—soups, salads, baked goods, specialty cheeses, house-made granola—even complete take-out meals. Green Label dishes are specially prepared by executive chef Bruce Young with a focus on healthy eating and are lower in sodium and rich in antioxidants.

Young works with high-quality ingredients, whole foods, naturally fermented grains and heart-healthy fats.

In addition, shoppers can find British specialties such as Tip Tree jams, Colman mustards and mint sauce, Vimto and Galaxy Ripple Bars.

The café serves a variety of baked goods, Lavazza coffee, soups such as chilled mint pea or sweet-and-sour beet fennel, sandwiches on crusty artisan breads, salads and savories such as spanakopita, sausage rolls, ham and cheese croissants.

The café and grocery, owned by Pete Hathaway and Bruce Young, also provides catering services. It is open Monday-Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday, 8 AM to 3 PM; 518-592-1818 or click on the link below.
