Hillsdale Suffragettes

by KATHRYN BOUGHTON

Suffragettes march along Anthony Street in Hillsdale NY in a patriotic parade. The figure exiting the frame on the left appears to be wearing a World War I uniform, suggesting the image was taken between 1918 when the war ended and August 1920 when the 19th Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote.

Hillsdale town historians Chris Atkins and Lauren Letellier have found circumstantial evidence suggesting that Anthony Street, previously known as Railroad Street, may have been named for Susan B. Anthony sometime between 1904 when it was still called by its original name and 1908 when they found the first reference to it as Anthony Street. Possibly the change coincided with the 1906 death of Anthony.

During the fight for Universal Suffrage, Anthony’s campaigning efforts passed through eastern New York State on several occasions.
