The Kaleidoscope Project

When the Cornell Inn was built in 1888 the world of residential fashion was dictated by opulent architects such as Richard Morris Hunt, Stanford White and the country’s first interior designer, Elsie de Wolfe. It was a very white world, where concepts of elegance rested firmly on the shoulders of European nobility.

But the world has changed dramatically since the Gilded Age, and now the historic inn, which has three buildings dating from the 18th to the 19th century, is being drawn into a vibrant, diverse society that draws inspiration from cultures of all colors.

The property, recently purchased and renovated by Kurt Inderbitzen (who formed Cornell Inn Holdings LLC for the transaction) has become the inaugural Kaleidoscope Project Designer Showhouse, a collaboration of 23 leading black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) designers who brought their design concepts to life in the inn’s guest rooms, suites, lobby, dining room and bar. The designs have been inspired by the themes of rest (neutral colors), reflection (cool colors) and rejuvenation (warm tones).

The showhouse is now open to the public from May 16th-June 6th with guest reservations being accepted beginning June 15th. When visiting the inn, guests can explore the scenic four-acre grounds, complete with beautifully groomed gardens, a koi pond and waterfall.

Tickets to tour the showhouse can be obtained at the link below. The inn is located at 203 Main Street in Lenox MA, 413-637-4800; Cornell Inn website.
