Silent Spring Revolution

Douglas Brinkley to Speak

One of today’s most acclaimed presidential historians, Douglas Brinkley, will present a talk and book signing of his latest book, Silent Spring Revolution: John F. Kennedy, Rachel Carson, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon and the Great Environmental Awakening on November 19th at 3PM the Mattison Auditorium at Kent School.

In Silent Spring Revolution Brinkley pays tribute to those who combated the mauling of the natural world in the 1960s: marine biologist and author Rachel Carson, Sierra Club Director David Brower, environmental justice advocate Barry Commoner, antinuclear activist Coretta Scott King, Secretary of the interior Stewart Udall, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, labor organizer Cesar Chavez and other crusaders.

In addition to his career as an author—33 books and counting—Brinkley is Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and professor of history at Rice University. He is the history commentator for CNN, Presidential Historian for the New York Historical Society and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair.
