Staycation: Lenox

by Rachel Louchen

The holidays are over. All family has (finally) left. Decorations have been returned to the attic and many presents to the stores as well. Now what? Sure, you could go away on a tropical vacation for some much needed Vitamin D but frankly – you're tired. It's okay to have post-holiday fatigue because there is a cure: a Staycation! Luckily our region is flush with places, events, and activities to more than meet your needs and the quintessential New England town of Lenox seems to have it all. We've rounded up the 'best in your backyard vacation destinations', so please, relax.

You can't discuss Lenox without mentioning the Cranwell Resort. You could spend a week there: a day at the spa, a day lounging at the indoor pool, a day being pampered at the salon, a day at the fitness center to work off the holiday or go the opposite route and indulge in dinner and a show at the Wyndhurst and Music Room. And did we mention the spa? It's worth repeating.

Lenox is a culinary hotspot, home to many of the best restaurants in the Berkshires. Alta, Firefly, Bistro Zinc and the beloved Nudel are all located within walking distance of each other on Church Street. Just be sure to make a reservation. Looking for something more low key and more affordable? Old Heritage Tavern and Rumpy's Tavern offer classic pub food in a relaxed setting and, while both are wallet-friendly, they also make sure to include as many locally sourced menu items as possible. Lenox also offers some quality brunch spots such as Spoon (get there early for a table) and Haven which has the atmosphere, delicious food and a killer mimosa. And Lenox Coffee serves Barrington Coffee Roasting Company's delicious blends and is the best people-watching spot in the area.

Looking for some entertainment? Lenox is home to the legendary Shakespeare and Company, popular with locals and across the country for their performances. Nearby is Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. While shut down for the season, the bucolic grounds are definitely worth a winter walk to enjoy the views of Lions Gate. Pittsfield is also a quick 10-minute drive away and has many options include The Colonial Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Group Group and The Beacon Theatre for a movie (and glass of wine).

Church Street is packed with shops and restaurants, making it the perfect walkable shopping town. After you've stocked up on wine and cheese from Nejaime's Wine, stop into the Lenox Library where you can catch a lecture or reading and marvel at the impeccably maintained 1815 building. If you enjoy the library and history is your thing, Ventfort Hall, a gilded age museum, and The Mount, former home to Edith Wharton, are great for a tour and history lesson. And if you're up for braving the cold, Olivia's Outlook offers a one-of-a-kind Berkshire view and hiking trails.

Lenox is a small town packed with culture and events making it one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the county. While stopping at Lenox Coffee you will be surprised to meet someone visiting from Texas or California. Luckily, we get to appreciate what is right in our backyard.
