The town of New Preston is a small gem located just south of Lake Waramaug. The village was settled by colonists in 1741 and is considered part of Washington, CT. During the Industrial Revolution, New Preston was a successful manufacturing center with mills and small factories lining the East Apetuck River, some of which are still standing today. However, with the decline of small manufacturing, New Preston largely became the summer retreat for New York City residents and remains so today.
The Historic downtown of New Preston is arguably one of the nicest downtown areas to visit, largely because as its website boasts it is a, “small town, (with) big shopping.” The mile long downtown area is home to beautifully maintained historic buildings. Visitors with active imaginations can easily envision 19th Century New Preston. Fortunately for shoppers the 19th Century day dream is over as soon as you set foot into any of the brilliantly eclectic shops, unless, of course it is Dawn Hill Antiques, which specializes in fine antiques from the 18th and 19th century. Their beautiful collection is sourced mainly from England, France and Sweden.
Shops such as Pergola, J. Seitz & Co., Privet House and Vol. 1 Antiques have anything you could possibly imagine for the home, each with their own distinctive twist. Pergola channels the beauty of nature with many items that tastefully bring the outdoors into you home.
J. Seitz & Co. seamlessly combines a timeless sophistication with a fun and youthful twist. Anything goes here, as long as it’s hand crafted. From a cozy sweater to fabulous furniture or that serving dish for your big party, they have it all. There is a fantastic men’s section where you can find something for even the pickiest guy.
Privet House and Vol. 1 reside in the same building and the collaboration works seamlessly. The first floor is focused on accessories with a kitchen collection that is superb. Upstairs, you will find an amazing inventory of new and antique items including a note-worthy collection of rare and vintage books.
At first glance, DK Schulman design looks like a beautiful gift shop and the first floor largely is. Take a trip upstairs and you’ll see what is so special. In the age of digital technology, cheap computer printouts have overtaken fine stationary. Not at DK Schulman. Whether you need invitations, place cards or even thank you notes, DK Schulman’s gorgeous stationary has you covered.
If local food is your thing, The Smithy can fulfill your needs. The renovated blacksmith shop now serves as a general store of sorts. It is dedicated to promoting the best local products including some of our favorites; Amazing Real Live Food Co. cheeses, organic vegetables and baked goods. After you have stocked up on food, New Preston Kitchen Goods should be your next stop. The store, a mainstay of the community for nearly 12 years, has the finest worldwide brands for all cooking needs. Cutlery, gadgets and stemware are just some of the products you will find at the store, so make note next time you're planning a dinner party.
A full day of New Preston shopping is bound to make anyone hungry. Good thing there are three great options for any time of the day. Nine Main Café serves breakfast and lunch. Their sandwiches are highly reviewed but get there early for it is very busy weekends and holidays.
Olivia Café, which is open for dinner 7 nights a week, is a Mediterranean gem. Patricia Brooks of the New York Times raved, “It has been ages since I have eaten at a place that lifted our spirits the way Olivia in New Preston did recently…”
The White Horse Country Pub, slightly out of the downtown area, has won the Best Pub Food in Connecticut multiple times. If you are one of the many people who lament the lack of pub food and culture in our area, make sure not to miss this place.
