West Street Grill
Restaurants come and go, but some become icons. Such is the case with West Street Grill at 43 West Street in Litchfield which back in 1990 set the culinary standard for Litchfield County.
James O’Shea and Charles Kafferman launched their game-changing restaurant with a focus on New American cuisine. From the beginning, West Street Grill brought the flair and cuisine of a four-star restaurant becoming a favorite stop during its more than 25-year history for some of the region’s most distinguished luminatti—including the likes of Susan Saint James, Dick Ebersol, Jason Robards, Michael J. Fox and Kevin Bacon—whether for a casual al fresco lunch overlooking the green or a more formal dinner in the newly remodeled dining room.
It may be New American, but the international character of Irishman James O’Shea’s cuisine can be discerned by a glance at a recent menu. Irish salmon, grilled chicken with Asian accents, rigatoni regati with fresh Marzano sauce; “Croque Madame,” with La Quercia prosciutto and Black Forest ham, and a Cuban sandwich made with with Mojo pork and Cuban bread. Even the all-American Angus burger gains a level of sophistication with Gorganzola aioli, confit of onions and Cognac crème fraiche. Whatever happened to ketchup and Kraft cheese slices?
