The Bright Side
Whippoorwill Farm
For the past two decades, there has been an increasing focus on the quality of food in the tristate region. One of the early purveyors of “locavore” foods was Whippoorwill Farm on Salmon Kill Road in Salisbury where, since 2003, Allen and Robin Cockerline have raised prime, grass-fed beef.
In 2020 the interest in locally sourced food has reached new heights as the COVID-19 crisis has made many shoppers cautious about going to large supermarkets. The lure of the small farm market has never been greater, especially those like Whippoorwill Farm, where social distancing is taken seriously.
The farm, which has been experiencing high demand, is still selling its grass-fed meats, but is now taking orders and payment by phone (860-435-2089) for outside pickup.
Farm products can be ordered Mondays through Saturdays. The couple say they have a good supply, although the selection is more limited.
The Cockerlines raise Devon-Angus cross cattle, mixed-breed heritage pigs and chickens on their 100-acre farm. The free-range animals are nurtured without the use of hormones or antibiotics. The beef is dry-aged, then vacuum wrapped and frozen for freshness.
