Zetterstrom at Five Points

Noted photographer Tom Zetterstrom of Canaan will give a gallery talk, “Homage to Ice and Snow,” Saturday evening from 4-5:40PM at Five Points Art Center in Torrington CT.

Zetterstrom currently has a retrospective exhibition of the same name, featuring vintage silver prints from three portfolios in Five Points West Gallery, 33 Main Street.

Zetterstrom, son of an arborist, has been a keen observer and protector of tree species throughout his life, photographing notable examples in black and white, which, he says, “involves thinking in black and white.”

“Exposing film only adds to the intensity of the experience,” he writes. “In this ‘Homage to Ice and Snow,’ we see seasonal elements enhance the white aspect, diminish the background noise, isolate the subject and concentrate our focus.”

Selections in the exhibit are drawn from the White Russia, Moving Point of View, and the ongoing Portraits of American Trees series.

Zetterstrom’s work spans five decades and continues today in various exhibitions, projects and lectures. Winter dominates in this exhibition and adds to the romantic quality of the work.

Each tree is captured “at the moment they noticed the camera,” according to critic, Michael Brenson. The other “moment” spanning the creation of this portfolio, is really an era that has now largely passed from native woodlands—the beauty and balance of the pre-invasive landscape.
